Robbery, extortion and hijacking offences increased by 44% in the northwest in the final quarter (Q4) of 2023 when compared to the same period in the previous year, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n The data shows that there was a 26% increase in the number of these type of incidents across all regions in the year up to Q4 2023, mainly driven by a rise in blackmail or extortion from the person offences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The northwest region also recorded the largest increase in theft and related offences in the period at 22%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Overall, the CSO said that criminal incidents that involved theft and related offences were up by 12%, with a total of 74,144 incidents over the full year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
