The demand for strong, well-fed calves is continuing to grow, with the calf trade and sales in marts very much in peak season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the number of calves presenting for sale continues to grow, the price being paid for calves is also holding strong. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agriland<\/em> spoke with two marts this week – one based in Co. Wicklow and the other in Co. Kerry, to determine how the calf trade faired this week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carnew Mart<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eugene Clune from Carnew Mart <\/a>said that there were 732 calves on offer at the Co. Wicklow-based mart for its weekly calf sale on Friday, March 22, with a much improved trade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clune said that the Hereford and Angus cross calves were met with a brisk trade from both farmers and exporters, with the majority of these calves selling for between \u20ac80 and \u20ac170.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stronger type calves and the continental type calves on offer sold from \u20ac220 to a top price of \u20ac425, according to Clune. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Friesian bulls sold for between \u20ac35 to \u20ac70 for the lighter type calves, while the stronger and farmer type calves sold from \u20ac90 to a top call of \u20ac185.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
