Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in 8 counties later today (Monday, May 20).

The alert, which will be in place from 2:00p.m until 9:00p.m., currently applies to Cavan; Donegal; Galway; Leitrim; Longford; Mayo; Roscommon and Sligo.

The national forecaster has said that there will be heavy downpours with thunderstorms and hail.

This will lead to spot flooding in some areas, poor visibility and difficult traveling conditions on roads.

There were reports of flash floods and small landslides in parts of Co. Waterford yesterday due to thunderstorms.

Tributes were paid to a farmer in Cappoquin who helped to clear a road after 33mm of rain fell in a 20-minute period.

Met Éireann has said that the coming week will be unsettled at times with showers and longer spells of rain in some areas.

It will be dry and bright this morning with sunny spells, showers will develop in the afternoon, heavy falls are expected in the midlands and west where there could be hail and lightning.

The showers will continue through to this evening and it will turn more overcast too. Highest temperatures of 19° to 23°C degrees and light winds.

Some showers in the midlands and the north and west will persist into the night, heavy at times. Winds remaining light with lowest temperatures of 10° to 13°.

There will be a cloudy start with showers early on Tuesday morning. The showers will turn heavy and thundery in the east and south later in the day. Highest temperatures of 14° to 18° with light winds.

Met Éireann has said that drying conditions will be generally moderate or poor over the coming week due to showers or rain at times.

However, this will vary day by day and from location to location depending on where the showers fall.

Spraying opportunities will also be moderate or poor over the coming week as a result of showers or longer spells of rain.
