Met Éireann has said that the coming week will be changeable and cold with spells of rain and drizzle at times.

The national forecaster said that most of the rain will occur in the west and southwest of the country, where accumulations are expected to be up to 2.5 times the average for this time of year.

Due to changing air masses temperatures will fluctuate somewhat, but on average will be near or slightly below normal. Mean air temperatures of 4° to 8°C

Soil temperatures are currently around several degrees above normal, running between 7.1° and 9.6°.

Any frost and ice will clear this morning (Monday, February 26) to leave a mainly dry and bright day with good spells of sunshine.

Highest afternoon temperatures of 7° to 9°, with the moderate northerly wind backing westerly and easing later.

Tonight will be dry and clear, frost will form as overnight temperatures drop to between -1° to 4°. Patches of mist will form in the calm conditions. Cloud will build in the west and north bringing some falls of rain.

On Tuesday (February 27), the rain will extend across the country, it will clear during the early afternoon. Daytime temperatures will range from 7° to 11°.

There will be frost on Tuesday night in lowest temperatures of 0° to 4°, cloud will thicken during the night to bring rain to the west and southwest.

The rain will extend countrywide during Wednesday (February 28), it will be dull with mist and fog. The south to southwesterly winds will be moderate to fresh with highest temperatures of 9° to 11°.

Wednesday night will be wet and blustery with spot flooding possible in some areas. The west to southwesterly winds will be gusty. Lowest temperatures of 2° to 6°.

It will feel cooler on Thursday (February 29) with sunny spells and blustery showers, some of which will be wintry and fall as hail. Sleet is possible on higher ground. Daytime temperatures will range from just 5° to 8° with an added wind chill factor.

Some hail, sleet and snow on hills are likely during Thursday night and Friday in widespread showers.

The weekend will be cold and unsettled with some good spells of sunshine and frost developing during the nights.

Heavy rainfall

Met Éireann said that drying conditions will be moderate or poor this week due to forecasted rain, drizzle and showers.

The best chance for spraying will be today, opportunities will be limited for the rest of the week.

Poorly drained soils are waterlogged and other soils are currently saturated or nearly saturated.

Most areas will see further deterioration of soil conditions this week due to further spells of rain and drizzle.
