As World Bee Day is taking place on Monday, May 20, ALDI is inviting customers to support biodiversity through the ‘Bee Happy’ event.

From Thursday, May 30, ALDI will have three types of bee-friendly flower basket available, each containing a selection of bee-friendly flowers, designed to attract pollinators.

ALDI aims to raise awareness on the importance of pollinators, as many species are in danger of disappearing and the public needs to ensure that their gardens and outdoor spaces are hospitable to the pollinators.

The ALDI event is also taking place in support of ALDI’s charity partner, Barnardos, with a portion of the proceeds from each purchase going directly to the charity, which supports vulnerable children and families across Ireland.

There will be various sizes of bee-friendly baskets available.

ALDI

ALDI has recently installed beehives at its Naas and Mitchelstown Regional Distribution Centres, housing a total of 60,000 bees. This initiative forms part of the retailer’s commitment to the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan.

Chief scientific officer at the National Biodiversity Data Centre with responsibility for the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan, Dr. Úna Fitzpatrick, said:

“Ireland’s 101 species of wild bees are in huge decline with one third threatened with extinction. Our bumblebees and other pollinators are disappearing due to lack of food.

“By adding bee-friendly plants to your garden you can create a vital food-pit-stop and create a garden landscape where bumblebees can survive and thrive,” she said.

Sponsorship

Meanwhile, earlier this year, Aldi decided not to renew its sponsorship with the National Ploughing Association (NPA) marking its departure from the national event after a 13-year run.

The 93rd National Ploughing Championships will take place at Ratheniska, Co. Laois this year.

The event will take place from September 17 to 19 for the third year in a row.

At the time, ALDI said: ““Now is the right time in our strategic growth journey to pursue new partnership opportunities.

“We wish the National Ploughing Association continued success and look forward to wearing our infamous blue stetsons as visitors to many more ploughing championships into the future.”
